Ch 8: Carlsbad caves - Sams First Drive
After our time in Austin, Texas, we headed to San Angelo on our way to the Badlands. At this point, driving was similar to motorcycle rules—early morning or early evening only to avoid the heat.
We drove to San Angelo State Park first from Austin. It was a shorter drive, and when we arrived, the park was already locked up. We lucked out when a local ranger was able to give us the pin for the lock and let us in. I was tired, and Sam was already in the front seat. This was the sign that Sam needed to get some driving in. She drove us from the front of the park to a camping stall. I backed us in, but she did drive the RV—WOOT WOOT!
Navi was usually pooped after these hot drives and needed some R&R at the end of any long drive.
The next week, we stayed at theCarlsbad RV Park and Campground at the edge of Carlsbad Caverns. Oh, how I wish we knew then what we know now. We would have never stayed at any RV park! BLM is the way to go if you have a proper solar system. Here, Sam is inside the Carlsbad Caves.
A wider shot of the location. Such a great way to break the heat. After this, I never thought I'd be in caves another three times that year while traveling abroad. The Carlsbad Caverns, hands down, are the most impressive walkable caves I've ever seen. There’s a reason National Parks are National Parks, and we really need to preserve these for future generations to experience.
Back to working and sage-ing the RV. Next up, we head off to see more family and friends on our way to the Grand Canyon.
